Decorating with Modern Living Room Furniture

Many people prefer modern living rooms because they follow clean lines and have simple colors. Modern is all about being neutral and minimalistic. Though the color scheme is neutral, a few bold pieces can be used to accentuate and accessorize the area. Pieces with angles are also prominent, but rounded pieces can also be used sparingly to create character and contrast.

Neutrals

Though you are mainly focusing on the furniture in the living room, you will also want to consider the walls. Everything about a modern room is about neutrality. This means you should consider painting your walls white. Stark whites are typically seen as the most modern, but most people can’t stand that much white. Therefore, a beige or cream could also work. The main goal is to have a blank slate that you can work from, creating a modern area with the things you bring in, including furniture.

Though neutral is the rule, many people break that rule or bend it by adding a piece of living room furniture that is bold, such as bright red. Otherwise, you will want to stick with beige, black, taupe and other neutral colors.

Pops of Color

Your pop of color usually comes from artwork or sofa cushions, though you can choose a bold piece of furniture, such as a chaise or sofa in a bright and fun color. The best pops of color include bright red, lime green and bright orange, though you can play around with colors that work for your style and flair.

Sleek

Glossy is the key to a modern home, including walls, floors and furniture. Many times, a high gloss paint is used on the walls and flooring consists of white or beige tiles that are also high-gloss. You may also choose to wax the floors to provide even more shine. Other flooring options that can work with a modern home can include linoleum, granite and concrete. Furnishings should include high-gloss leathers and other fine fabrics, and can also include lacquer, steel and chrome.

Angles and Geometrics

Modern styles focus a lot of their attentions on geometry and angles. The most common of these include rectangles and squares, though triangles are also popular. Any shape that has a straight edge can work wonderfully. For a slight difference, you can include one or two furnishings with rounded edges if you must. Perfect circles are also popular.
