Grow lights are technically an artificial source of light that produces the same effects as natural light in order for plants to grow. They emit an electromagnetic spectrum suitable to help with photosynthesis and are used in many applications, such as green houses, dark houses and anywhere where the hours of daylight are insufficient to produce enough natural light resources. As different plants require different types of cultivation, some grow light emulate light that the sun emits or they offer a natural light pertaining specifically to the type of plant growing. Indoor gardeners can use grow lights to help their plants and flowers. Those who grow plants for eating and food production use grow lights, especially in the winter, when there is little natural sunlight available to propagate the plant life. There are many different types of grow lights that can used, including fluorescent, incandescent, LED lights, and high intensity discharge lamps—HID’s. Nowadays the most commonly used types are the HID’s and the fluorescent bulbs. However, professional vegetable growers tend to favor the HPS—high pressure sodium—or the MH—metal halide—lights. Fluorescent lights, however, are now slowly overtaking those in sales because of their higher efficiency and better economic value. LED Grow Lights and their Properties LED’s offer bright light production which emit wavelengths of the same light that corresponds to the particular needs of the specific plants or vegetables being grown. LED’s also produce less heat than fluorescent bulbs, making it more useful to create growth in healthy plants and reduce the need for watering. It is well documented that vegetative plant prefer—or rather do better—under LED lights that emit a blue light, rather than any other color. This could be connected to the wavelength emitted by blue lights as opposed to the wavelength of most other LED lights. Fruit on the other hand seems to fare better under red LED lights, as do flowers. Also, further inspections have indicated that ultraviolet or infrared diodes offer the full spectrum that flowers and plants need to assist growth.
