Top 4 Desk Lamp Designs

Did you know that of all the artificial lightings, the desk lamp is the closest source of light to your eyes? In fact, some professions require a person to use a desk lamp as close as 10 cm from the retina. Being the closest light source, it becomes extremely important to choose the right desk lamp for your requirements.

Desk Lamp: Popular Designs

Although there are many varieties of desk lamps to choose from, they can be primarily categorized into 4 sub-classes. This classification is done on the basis of the structure and the usage of a lamp:

  1. Jointed lamps: The most common and easily available type of desk lamp is a jointed lamp. The head contains a bulb, powered by the wire that runs through the neck and into the base, where a switch is located to turn it on. Generally, jointed lamps have rotatable heads, although the jointed neck restricts movement to a 90 degree horizon in a vertical direction. Built to be functional, they fail to serve ornamental purposes.
  2. Gooseneck lamp: Inspired by the design of a goose’s neck, this desk lamp is built to be flexible. Although the neck is joined to the head, the head as well as the neck can be moved and adjusted independently. Due to this reason, they are the most preferred type of desk lamp for people who work late nights. The smaller heads make it easy to focus light on a desired area. Having a flexible neck allows them to be screwed to a wall or table top as well.
  3. Clip-on lamp: Ideal for very small spaces, these lamps are mostly use for focusing or highlighting a small area. The foot or the base of a lamp is replaced by a clip, the head becomes smaller and the neck is flexible, making it fit to be attached on the side of a table or even on a monitor. To compensate for the smaller head, this type of desk lamp comes with halogen or amber bulbs. They prove to be good desk lamps but can also be used for cosmetic lighting.
  4. Banker’s lamp: Also known as the classic lamp, this type of desk lamp is used mostly for ornamental purposes. Made of decorative glass and shiny metal polishing, these lamps have huge heads and aesthetically appealing necks. The lights may also come in various colors. However, they are not suited for prolonged usage. The light is also not bright enough to work with for a long period of time.

A single desk lamp type cannot be classified as good or bad. They all have been designed to serve different purposes. Before buying one, consider your lighting and cosmetic requirements.
